Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Community newspapers are vital in fostering local communication, addressing grassroots issues, and bridging the information gap between citizens and authorities. Objectivity in reporting, characterized by impartiality and fairness, is essential for maintaining credibility and trust among readers. In Dambatta Local Government, Kano State, community newspapers play a pivotal role in disseminating news about agriculture, education, health, and local governance (Yusuf & Ibrahim, 2024). However, public perception of objectivity in these newspapers varies, influenced by factors such as ownership, editorial policies, and socio-political dynamics (Ahmed & Bello, 2023). Previous studies emphasize that perceived bias or favoritism can erode trust, reducing the effectiveness of community newspapers in driving social cohesion and development (Garba & Musa, 2025). This research aims to assess how residents of Dambatta perceive the objectivity of their community newspapers, exploring the implications for readership and trust.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The credibility of community newspapers in Dambatta is often questioned due to perceived biases in reporting. Factors such as political affiliations, cultural influences, and economic pressures may compromise objectivity, leading to selective coverage or slanted narratives (Bello & Abdullahi, 2023). Such perceptions undermine the role of community newspapers as unbiased platforms for information dissemination and dialogue. While community newspapers are crucial in addressing local issues, their impact is diminished when readers view their content as biased or unreliable. This study addresses the gap by investigating public perceptions of objectivity in community newspapers in Dambatta, providing insights into improving trust and credibility.
